Habitat for Humanity offers free home maintenance training to City of Canton homeowners

Canton, Ohio, September 21, 2018 – Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio invites homeowners from the City of Canton to participate in their award-winning Homeowner Maintenance Education (H.O.M.E.) classes — hands-on educational courses that teach basic, yet vital, home maintenance skills. Through a grant from the City of Canton, this one-day course is free for Canton homeowners.

H.O.M.E. is comprised of five life-sized, permanent modules, each replicating aspects of a standard home: kitchen, bathroom, interior windows, exterior siding, basement with electrical and plumbing components, and interior doors and walls. Participants learn skills associated with each component such as basic plumbing maintenance, proper winterization, interior painting, and much more. The sessions are facilitated by trained Habitat staff and volunteers.

This training earned Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio the Clarence E. Jordan Award from Habitat for Humanity International, recognizing excellence and innovation. The course is typically part of the sweat equity requirements each Habitat partner family must complete. “Everyone will learn something new in this course and we’re thrilled to open it to the public for the first time ever,” said Aaron Brown, Habitat’s Director of Neighborhood Investment. “Successful homeownership comes with many responsibilities and challenges, so H.O.M.E. is designed to offer homeowners the tools they’ll need to save time and money while building a sense of self-confidence for maintaining and improving their own homes.”

Participants can choose from four course dates: October 13, October 27, November 3, and November 17. All classes are on Saturdays from 8:30am to 3pm at the Habitat for Humanity campus at 1400 Raff Road SW, Canton. Homeowners in the City of Canton who would like to learn more or register for this free training should visit home.habitateco.org or call Habitat’s Neighborhood Investment team at 330-915-5888.
