Lake Board of Education makes community impact through Habitat for Humanity deconstruction

Canton, Ohio, February 22, 2017 – A team of volunteers from Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio has completed a “deconstruction” project at 488 Market Ave N, Uniontown, as a part of Lake Local Schools’ efforts to improve and expand its facilities. The Lake Board of Education invited Habitat to remove and repurpose usable materials such as cabinets, doors, and windows from the property which is scheduled for demolition.

By partnering with Habitat, the School Board is keeping usable materials out of a landfill and helping low income families build and renovate their own homes with Habitat for Humanity. Habitat offers its free deconstruction program as a way to generate resources that build new homes with local families who need decent, affordable shelter. The items removed from deconstruction properties will be recycled, sold as scrap, or sold to the public at ReStore, Habitat’s nonprofit thrift store in Canton.

Freda Hathaway has volunteered to help with local Habitat deconstruction projects. “I’ve seen Habitat projects like this make such a big impact for an entire community like ours,” she said, “and I’m thrilled this deconstruction will not only impact the futures of families who partner with Habitat, but also the education and experiences of all our students at Lake.”

“We’re so thankful the School Board was thinking outside the box with this property,” said Ron Woodward, Community Liaison at Habitat for Humanity ReStore. “Instead of simply tearing down this house, they’ve helped Habitat do a lot of good through the materials we have removed. Deconstruction, ReStore, Habitat for Humanity, it all works together to offer families a hand up, not a hand out.”

The deconstruction program at Habitat has become a valuable solution for realtors, local construction companies, businesses and homeowners who are renovating their space, and even local municipalities. Most deconstruction projects can be completed within a few hours, and each donation is tax deductible.

“We are so grateful for this opportunity to partner with Habitat for Humanity,” said Jennifer Anderson, School Board Vice President. “Any chance we have to work with a local organization that serves others like Habitat helps us live out Lake’s mission and values of serving our community. This project really is a win all around.”
